The Books We Read and the People We Meet

I intended to write a New Year's Day post articulating some of my goals for 2009. I didn't fret when January 1st came and went without a post, but suddenly, here it is January 7th and I still haven't done it!!! Where does the time go?? It just amazes me how fast a week can fly by and how little of my Project List actually gets accomplished.

One of my goals for 2009 is to read through the entire Bible. This is something I have accomplished in the past -- but it has been quite a few years. So, I wanted to try to accomplish it again this year. However, I'm ashamed to say that I'm already behind schedule. :( Hopefully, by posting my intentions here, it will provide some accountability to get back on track and stay on schedule with my reading!

Thanks to my parents' generosity, I have a nice new Bible to read and am excited to glean some new insights from God's Word this year.

Another goal I have is to read at least one book a month. I know that is a paltry amount, but with the busyness of my life, I think that is all I can manage. I've been very motivated and inspired by the Reading List of President Bush. He is probably one of the busiest men in the world and yet he finds time to challenge his mind through reading great books, and most importantly, by reading the Greatest of Books! I don't quite have the support staff he does, so I don't think I can manage to read a book a week! But, I do want to challenge myself with good books. I am reminded of the quote -- "You are the same today as you will be five years from now except for two things: the people you meet and the books you read."

I'm off to a good start, as I have already managed to read one book. This was a fun read, written by a family which I've met, talked to a couple times, and admired from a far. I was challenged and inspired by reading about this amazing family!

I need to get on track with my Bible reading before selecting my next book. How about you? What do you plan to read this year?

I love your reading plan! I read through the Bible every 18 months as I found that more manageable than doing it in a year (allows time for those catch-ups that sometimes occur). At the moment I'm reading it in chronological order which provides lots of new insight. As for books, I love to read but only do it during school holidays otherwise I'd never get anything done. Which reminds me, I need to go to the library and borrow some books.

I came across your blog about a month ago and have enjoyed reading! Reading the entire Bible this year is on my list (it's been a couple of years), as well as some missionary biographies, rereading Your Money or Your Life...the list is still growing :)

I'm in the middle of Emotional Purity by Heather Paulsen, a great read to help your young people navigate the relationships they make with others. said...

Have had the Dugger book in hand since before Christmas. I think we're trying to catch them! LOL
Finishing the Bible is definitely on my list for this year, got close to halfway through last year.
