Happy Birthday Josh!

Today is Joshua's 17th birthday!!!

Josh is #4 in the line up, which means he has 2 older sisters and 1 older brother, and 2 younger sisters and 4 younger brothers!

Josh is an industrious young man, who can't stand to just "sit around." He likes to keep busy! He shows initiative and works hard. He is precise and can be rather technical at times. He also has the "gift of gab!" Josh is a junior in high school, who works as a lifeguard, and hopes to pursue a career in the navy as an oceanographer/meteorologist.

We celebrated Joshua's birthday on Sunday, because he is golfing in a school golf tournament today and won't be home until late. He doesn't really like us to make a big deal out of his birthday, but he does enjoy having that special birthday meal and collecting that birthday cash!!!

Josh really wanted steak for his birthday, but didn't want to ask for it, because he knows it is so expensive, and would put a strain on the grocery budget. Fortunately, Alan and I found a good deal on some steak at Sam's, and were able to surprise him with his favorite meal!

Josh enjoys doing the grilling, so he had the opportunity to grill the steak exactly to his liking!

I served the steak with some of Joshua's favorite side dishes -- Ranch Mashed Potatoes, Sauteed Asparagus (which Taylor calls "Asparagi!"), and Fresh Pineapple.

Josh thoroughly enjoyed his birthday feast! Of course, everything tastes better on the Red Plate!!!

My mom bought me the Red "You are Special" plate nearly 20 years ago, and we have used it many times through the years to honor the person who is celebrating some special occasion.

Josh requested a birthday cake from Sam's. He likes marble cake with buttercream icing. Here is his much-anticipated cake!

Josh blowing out the candles . . .

and opening his cards . . .

Ok, now for a walk down memory lane!!! I dug out some old pictures of Josh for this special occasion! He was such a cute, little baby/toddler!!

This is me (a mere babe myself at 29!), Tiffany (6 1/2 years old) and Joshua David (about 2 weeks old).

These are pictures of Joshua taking his first steps on Tiffany's birthday, July 18, 1993~! He was 16 months old, and he thought he couldn't walk unless he was holding onto something -- thus the umbrella! :)

The following picture was taken on Joshua's 2nd birthday.

Josh got this tricycle and tool belt for his birthday! I think he was 3 or 4 here.

Joshua, helping Nanny make bread! I know my Mom remembers this day!!! ;)

Joshua, found his drawer to be a convenient place for a little nap!!!!! :)

Josh is 5 here and his Dad just gave him his first "buzz!" He is with Nanny (my mom), who is holding baby Hannah. Josh and Hannah both share a March birthday.

I love this picture!! Josh is the one crawling through the tunnel!

I believe this picture was taken in the fall of 1996. Tiffany would have been 11, Ashlyn - 9, Taylor - 6, Joshua - 4, Joseph - 2, and Christopher - 1.

It is amazing how quickly the years go by! If you are still a mom of littles, try to savor the moments! Before you know it, your little boys will be young men, towering over you, flexing their manhood muscles, dreaming their own dreams, planning their futures, looking forward to the day when they can establish their own homes and families. So, enjoy those little boys . . .

Happy Birthday to Josh! He is growing up to be a fine young man, I bet you're proud of him :)

I thoroughly enjoyed viewing the pictures and even caught myself with teary eyes! My son is three years old and this blog post reminded me of how fast time truly flies by!

Thank you for 'following' my blog, I truly feel honored and I can't wait to get to know you better!!

Happy Birthday to Josh! My mom had a birthday yesterday too.
I have a question...when you serve a meal, do you take the candles off the table and put the food in the middle? Also, do you have to wash your placemats often? With so many littles, I don't use placemats, not yet anyway, but I like how they look.

Kathy,

Most of the time, I place the food between the candles. It is a LONG table! There is usually plenty of room there. I also have a buffet behind the table that I use for additional food on holidays. Sometimes, we just leave the food on the stovetop in the kitchen and serve from there. It reduces spills on the tablecloth!

I usually wash my tablecloth and placemats every Saturday, so they are nice and clean for Sunday. By Sunday afternoon, they usually need washed again! Unless someone spills a glass of tea, I generally just use them as they are and wash again the next weekend. Otherwise, they would fall apart from daily laundering!

I would prefer to have a wood table with placemats and no tablecloth for everyday, but we could not find a table long enough for our family without going with a more formal dining table that does not have a protective finish. And since I have a rather formal dining room, I couldn't have gone with a casual farm table or something. So, I ended up with this beautiful, mahogany table, which is 10 feet long and extends to 14 feet with both leaves in, but I don't get to see the beauty of the table, because I keep it covered all the time with a table pad, tablecloth and placemats.

I have a small breakfast table in the kitchen, where we eat breakfast and lunch and some casual suppers, but it only seats six. Beside the table is a bar area with 3 bar stools, but it is a really Tight squeeze with my long-legged crew! So, we usually eat there when the boys are at practice or a game or my husband is working late and we don't have the full crowd!

It can be a challenge just fitting a large family around the table, let alone cooking for everyone!

That was probably way more than you wanted to know! :)

Dinner looked great....wish we could have been there! :) Hope Josh had a great birthday! BTW, I don't know if I have ever asked you, but how do you make birthdays special at your house? I always struggle with good ideas in that department...usually they are celebrated in a "rush" between activities, and we don't spend much on presents(I'm sure you are in the same situation there), so I like to find other neat ways of making them feel special that day! Pass on any good ideas, new traditions, etc.. :) Unfortunately, God didn't bless me in the "creativity department"!

It is amazing how quickly our children have grown! I loved looking at the pictures of "days past", they bring back many memories! ("Taylor pushed me right here" comes to mind! BTW, heard he "pushed" her again at EI, playing volleyball...he went for a ball and she went to the other side of the court--some things never change!)I wish we still lived close together so that we could do more things together---like swimming in the pool, hiking up the mountains, visiting alligator swamps....:) We love and miss you much, and hope to see you this summer sometime!

Happy belated birthday to Josh! Loved the pics. I especially love the pic of him curled up to sleep in his drawer. I can totally see either one of my youngest two doing that!! ;)

Joshua was the boy's name I had picked out for my 6 yr. old. My dh suggested it, I ended up loving that name, and then he announced he didn't like it anymore. LOL However, he says that if we have another boy, we can name the next one Joshua. :)
