Celebrating Sixteen Years

Sixteen years ago, I sent out homemade Christmas Cards with the following verse handwritten on the front:

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." -- Isaiah 9:6

Inside, I announced the birth of our fifth child and third son, Joseph Andrew, who was born on the 21st day of December, 1993.

Little Joseph turned sixteen yesterday. It is unbelievable how quickly time passes and how soon our little boys grow up into big, strong sons. Joe has become a mature and handsome young man, but he still has that same sweet and playful spirit that he had as a little boy.

We had Joe's birthday meal after church on Sunday. I made him country fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, and rolls for his special dinner.

One of our family traditions is that the birthday boy/girl eats on the red "You are Special Plate."

Another tradition is that the birthday boy/girl gets out of kitchen duty for the day! So, everyone but Joe worked quickly to clean up the kitchen so Joe could open his presents!

Bethany helped Joe with this "chore," never leaving his lap the whole time! :)

Joseph received a belt, a shirt from American Eagle, a Classic controller for the Wii, some candy and some money. Then, he opened his gift from Taylor -- an MP3 player! Now that was a surprise -- that Tay would part with enough cash to buy him an MP3 player! But, then Tay spilled the secret of how he acquired that MP3 player -- he won it in a pumpkin pie eating contest at college!!!! Oh my! :()

When we all quit laughing over that, we brought out Joseph's cake. (We normally do the cake first, but we were all so full from lunch, that we decided to do the cake after the presents!) Joseph had requested a marble cake from Publix, so that is what you see here:

Joe blew out all sixteen candles without any help from his sidekick!

And then devoured this "little" piece of cake plus a plate of ice cream! :)

This was the last birthday of the year, with a break until March.

Happy Birthday Joe!

I can't believe Joe is 16 already!! I loved his birthday meal!! :) (a good southern dish!!)

I love the story of Taylor winning the pie eating contest!! How much did he have to eat to win??? (and I thought he had lost weight ...
.....what was I thinking???)

I love celebrating birthdays, but it is nice to get a break! Especially when they fall around Christmas....it is a "double- whammy" to the pocket-book!! :)

This is one of my favorite meals! Wish I'd been there. (Of course, your family wouldn't know who I was.)

Joseph is quite handsome. (Yeah, I know we're not supposed to compliment God-given looks.)
