My Other Sister

I know I've told you about my awesome sister, Rebecca. But, did you know that I have another "sister" who lives in Brazil??

Way back in 1979/1980, when I was a senior in high school, my parents opened our home to an exchange student from Brazil, who came to live with us for the year, so she could experience life in America and improve her English skills. It was truly a wonderful experience to have Neide become part of our family and our lives. She attended all of my classes with me at the local public high school, went to youth group activities with me at my church, even went to the senior prom with me! We became very close and had a wonderful year together!

Here is an old picture that Neide sent me recently of my parents, my sister - Rebecca, Neide and me. Wow -- it is unbelievable how young we all look!

After graduation, Neide went back to Brazil, and I went on with my life -- going to college, getting married, having children, and beginning my homeschool journey, and we lost touch for a time. Later, Neide married an American missionary to Brazil and they moved to Wisconsin, where he pastored a church for many years. She helped with the ministry, gave birth to two children, and became a homeschooling mother herself! :)

Now, Neide and her family have moved back to Brazil, where she and her husband are involved with a ministry there. Although Neide and I are separated by many miles, we are actually able to stay in touch due to the wonders of the internet! Neide started a blog this past year, and it has been fun to take peeks into her daily life through her blog posts. She recently shared a thought-provoking post about Christmas here.

I decided to pull out some OLD photos (the ones still in those menacing magnetic albums!) and share some snapshots of the fun times we had when Neide lived with us. It was so much fun to relive these memories and hard to believe they took place thirty years ago!!!!!!!

I love this picture, because this was Neide's First Snow! We had so much fun having a snowball fight and making a snowman!!

Here we are dressed up in 50's attire for a Sock Hop hosted by my church youth group. I remember having a Nifty time! :)

Here we are at Disney World during Spring Break.

And at Daytona Beach!!! :)

Here was Neide dressed up for our senior prom! My Mom made both of our dresses!

Doesn't she have a Beautiful Smile??

That was such a neat year with Neide....though I am sure she had memories of my being a big brat!! (I am so glad God doesn't give up on us!)I'm glad she has continued to be a part of our family through the years. Thanks for scanning those photos .... it was delightful! The snowman was cute too.....we sure were artistic! :)(what happened to me now that I am older???? I can't seem to find any creative abilities!!):)

Oh wow! that's amazing! It's wonderful that your parents opened up their home to her and I'm sure widened your own horizons too :D

I know the Internet is a waste of time, but there's a good side to it, too. I'm glad I've gotten to know YOU better through it!

Now this is a flashback!! That is so cool that you got to know such a special person and to think she was living here in my own Wisconsin!! The photos are great. I totally remember those 70's. I graduated in 79. Seems like yesterday.

I just finished writing such a nice "comment" and then lost it all, so here I am trying it again!

I have great memories of my time in SC living with the Malcolms. God blessed me by placing me in such a neat and special family. Some day I will write "My memories of SC". It will should be fun reminiscing. For now, I just wanted to say that I love you, Elizabeth and Rebecca. I enjoy following your blogs and knowing what's going on in your lives. I praise the Lord for how you both have turned out to be such great Mothers and women of great faith. I continue learning from you "daily".

May God bless you and continue to grow you into the image of Jesus Christ!

Your Brazilian/American sister (I do have dual citizenship now!)

Elizabeth, I have a friend at church who grew up in Brazil as a child of missionaries. I wonder what ministry Neide and her husband are involved with. I have to ask my friend what the name of her group was.
