The Importance of Character

Recently, one of my older daughters has been amazed to find unexpected doors of opportunity opening to her.  Each of these opportunities have come about either directly or indirectly because of her character.  I'm talking about her diligence, her initiative, her enthusisam, her flexibility, her availability, her loyalty, her joyful spirit, and her respect for authority.  I could say the exact same things about my other adult daughter, as well.

Truly, character has made the difference in their lives.

The unfolding of recent events has been a striking reminder to me of the importance of character

In my first decade of homeschooling, I put great emphasis on character training.  I believed that if our children had godly character, that doors of opportunity would open for them, even if they lacked some of the credentials usually required.

In my second decade of homeschooling, I found my focus gradually shifting more towards academics than character, motivated by the pressure of fulfilling high school course requirements and facing college entrance exams.

Truly, there is a season for everything, and if a strong foundation of character has been built in the early years, then it seems appropriate to begin to focus more on academics during a young person's high school years.  However, in my situation, the high school years for my older children have been the formative years for my younger crew.

I wonder if I've focused enough on character with my younger children?   Regretfully, I fear I have not, and thus, I am recommiting myself to making the character education of my younger children a top priority.  Why?  Because "to educate a person in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society." -- Teddy Roosevelt

As a result of my renewed focus on character, I am starting a series on Teaching Character in the Home, as much for my benefit as for yours.  Pray for me as I attempt to put this together and post it in a timely manner!  ;)

If there is righteousness in the heart,
there will be beauty in character.
If there is beauty in character,
there will be harmony in the home.
If there is harmony in the home,
there will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation,
there will be peace in the world.

I love your pictures...and the post! (ouch)

Sometimes I think we really are twins....as God seems to "enlighten" us about the same issues, often at the same time!

I have noticed a real lack of godly character in some of my children...I was just praying about that over the weekend. God opened my eyes to how much I have neglected much of that teaching through the years...."afterall, they get it in Christian schooling..." (we can get really good at excuse making!) So, I too am trying to do better at this area, knowing that it is only as I allow God to truly work in my heart/life can I have any measure of success! I think I am often guilty of trying to live in the flesh, and not by the Spirit!

So great to see the fruit of your sowing into her life all those years.

I forgot to tell you that the email address I link to my blog is one that I check a little less often. I put that one there to catch the spam but you can use the one I sent you.
