The Coolest Recipe Ever!!!!

This is the coolest, most amazing recipe you've ever seen, and is perfect for a Fun, Easy Breakfast for a group!  It is ideal to serve if you do sleepovers at your house (we don't), after church on a Sunday night, when camping, or just for fun!  This amazing recipe is Omelettes in a Bag!

This is what you do:

Prepare ingredients of your choice and place in bowls.  I used diced bell pepper, mushrooms, green onions, tomatoes, and grated cheddar.

Give every person a quart-size, zip-lock FREEZER bag, and instruct them to do the following:

  • Write their name on the bag with a Sharpie.
  • Break two eggs into their bag.
  • Fill each bag with toppings of their choice.
  • Seal tightly, pressing the air out.
  • "Smoosh" eggs and toppings together, until well mixed.

Place as many as 6 bags into a large pot of boiling water, and set the timer for 13 minutes.

Remove the bags with tongs.  Carefully open each bag (watching out for steam!) and roll the omelette out onto a waiting plate!  Let cool, while you marvel at the perfect omelette, and Enjoy!!

That is really cool! I want to try it. I have a question though. Do you know whether there are harmful effects of the food being cooked in plastic?

We made that when camping in the UP of Michigan! :)

I remember thinking..."what did my sister tell me to do, this looks so gross!" But, it came out great! It really is a *cool* recipe! They were delicious!

It is funny that you made them, as one of my children recently asked if we could make the "omelets in a bag" again. But, I thought it would be more special if we saved this recipe only for camping trips!

Rachel, I fear that you are right about cooking in plastic. :( I discourage reheating food on plastic plates in the microwave for that reason. I was hoping that boiling in water might not be as harmful as nuking?? Whatcha think?? Because of those concerns, I reserve this recipe for special occasions only. Otherwise, I'd be tempted to make these every week for sure!!! :)

Any form of heat (or cold) when it comes to plastic releases the chemicals that it contains. Unless you're buying BPA-free, all-natural ziploc bags, I think you're very wise to only have this meal every once in awhile!

We are SO making this for the first day of school (this coming Monday =8-/) And I'll be on the lookout for the PBA free bags because I think my kids are gonna love this!

You're so creative :)
