31 Days of Pumpkin: Day 16

Yes They're All Ours:31 Days

Some of my readers have been reporting pumpkin shortages that have prevented them from buying canned pumpkin or requiring them to pay higher-than-normal prices for pumpkin, whether fresh or canned.  So, I'm curious -- have you had trouble finding canned pumpkin?  Are you paying higher prices for it?  If so, where do you live??

Based on my research, the pumpkin crops in some parts of the USA were damaged due to heavy spring rains and flooding, then hit with an outbreak of a pumpkin fungus, and then finished off by Hurricane Irene.  The result is a shortage of fresh pumpkins in some areas, especially the northeast.  Click here or here to read more about the pumpkin shortage of 2011.

However, the good news is that according to this article, there should be plenty of canned pumpkin on the shelves in time for holiday baking!

I've started thinking that even if there is not a pumpkin shortage -- there may be one by the time I finish with my 31 Days of Pumpkin!   :)  This is from a recent shopping trip!

I've certainly been buying lots of it!!  Here in Southeast Georgia, I've been buying canned pumpkin for $1.99 a can.  I keep hoping that Publix will offer a Buy-One-Get-One-Free sale on it -- perhaps that will happen closer to the holidays.  If so, I will certainly stock up.  Not because I'm afraid of a pumpkin shortage . . . but because I love to cook with pumpkin, not just during the holidays, but all year 'round!!!  :)

I bought a few cans at Aldi this week, but I don't remember how much I paid.
There was a shortage here last year, but I haven't heard much about it this year.
Believe it or not, we have had a peanut butter shortage here! That is a major staple for me, so that could be a problem!
Thanks for doing all this baking! I am enjoying the new recipe ideas.

I bought some pumpkin last week at Walmart for $1.68 a can but I had been using the frozen pumpkin I had made myself, I just ran out. I didn't know if $1.68 was high or not. There was plenty on the shelf and I'm sure I can get it cheaper at Aldi's but I only go there about 1x a month. I have heard we are going to have a p.b. shortage too, I need to stock up! We live in east TN.
