A Scare at the Beach!

In honor of Tiffany's birthday yesterday, we decided to be "beach bums!" We packed a cooler with sandwiches and water bottles and grabbed two bags of our favorite Sun Chips and headed to the beach.

It was a beautiful, sunny, breezy, not-too-hot kind of day and we enjoyed the sand and the surf.  About 3:00 in the afternoon we started keeping an eye on a storm brewing in the distance. Then, I saw the storm cloud grow a swirling "finger" that stretched down into the water.  Of course, my heart beat a bit faster as I immediately thought it might be a tornado -- only I wasn't sure.  No one around me seemed to be panicking.  The people around us were standing and watching this eerie weather formation and speculating as to what it was.  We soon learned from the lifeguard that it was a water spout.

I had never seen a water spout before, so I was amazed and unnerved by the sight of it.  I really wasn't sure if it was dangerous or not, but I figured if these storm clouds could produce a water spout one minute, they could bring forth a real tornado the next minute!  So, I rounded up the kids and we hurriedly packed up all of our stuff (no quick or easy task!) and got off the beach and into the White Elephant in record time!  Fortunately, we made it to the van before the sky opened up and the deluge began, and thankfully the water spout didn't make landfall!

So, I wonder if you've ever seen a water spout before?  Would you have been scared if you had been at the beach and seen this sight?

Wow - I would love to see a water spout! I would probably be packing up & heading out, but to see one would be amazing. Living in Oklahoma, tornados are a common occurance statewide, so you get used to it. However, in my 30 years of living here, I have only seen 1 tornado in person. That was pretty neat - although I probably should've been in the basement. Thank the Lord for His protection!
