Berry Picking

One of the things we did to create memories this week was to go blueberry picking! This outing provided us with some Free Fun, which resulted in several quarts of delicious, sweet blueberries, the satisfaction of picking (and sampling) our own berries, and the checking off of another item on our Summer Bucket List!

We started our day early -- meeting our friends for the drive to the secluded blueberry patch at 7:40 am.

The White Elephant was a little nervous about driving on the narrow, rutted dirt path to the blueberry patch, but every adventure needs a little excitement, right??  ;)

Our early start enabled us to beat the heat, but we didn't beat the mosquitoes!  :(  They got an even earlier start, I'm afraid!

Thanks to Hannah, we got lots of great pictures from our Blueberry Adventure!

We picked abut 32 quarts of blueberries, one quart of which we devoured as we picked!  ;)  That left us with 31 quarts -- we gave the owner 16 quarts, and kept 15.  (The deal was we did the picking and got to keep half of what we picked for FREE!)  Talk about a Win-Win situation!!!!

This is what we took home!

The first order of business was to make Blueberry Biscuits!  Want the recipe?  (Yes, I thought so!!)

Blueberry Biscuits

2 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 TBSP powdered sugar
4 TBSP butter, cut into pieces
1 cup buttermilk (or 1 TBSP lemon juice added to a cup of milk for 5 minutes)
1 cup blueberries
Glaze:  1 cup powdered sugar plus 2-4 TBSP milk

Stir together all the dry ingredients and cut in the butter.  Add the liquid to make a soft dough.  Fold in the blueberries.  Then roll it out on a slightly floured board to a thickness of ½ inch.  With biscuit cutter, cut dough before putting it into a greased pan and bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes.

Glaze:  Whisk together powdered sugar and milk to desired thickness.  Drizzle over biscuits.

Looks like a good haul of berries! I linked one of our blueberry picking trips. My FIL's are finished, but we'd go out several evenings/week and have blueberries for dessert. :)
