Welcome back to my new blog series, From my Front Porch, where I share weekly updates from my home and family. My hope is that you'll fix yourself a cup of coffee or tea, or perhaps even a glass of lemonade, and imagine us sitting together on my front porch, chatting about life and catching up on the latest news! I hope you'll join me each Friday on My Front Porch!
Around the House
Remember those boxes I told you about that ended up in my bedroom? They are still there! :( I sort of "hit the wall" when it comes to sorting through stuff that I don't know where to put, and I've just ignored them all week. Not good, because piles of clutter really frustrate my husband. So, I must force myself to tackle those boxes of odds and ends this week!!! :)
Actually, I've been tired this week. (Perhaps it was the busyness of the previous weekend catching up to me!) So, I haven't accomplished much around the house outside of routine house cleaning, laundry/ironing, and meal prep, which is actually a big enough job! :)
My front porch is a bit soggy this morning, thanks to Tropical Storm Andrea, so let's grab our drinks and sit for a spell in my family room, as we continue the tour of my new house!
This is the view from the foyer, as we walk through the front door.
There wasn't room in the dining room for my buffet, so I had to put it in this random location. I'm not sure that it really looks that great here -- but I couldn't find another place to put it and I'm not willing to part with it . . . so here it resides!
This is a view of the family room looking from the kitchen. The doorway to the left leads to the powder room on the right and the master bedroom on the left. Notice that I didn't group the furniture around the fireplace . . . more on that in a minute! :)
The family room is a bit small for a family our size, but there's something to be said for coziness! :) It is cozy and comfortable, and I was able to create a great conversational area by creatively arranging the furniture. At this point I'm not able to use my lamps, but we hope to get an outlet put in the floor under the couch one of these days, so I can plug in my lamps inconspicuously! :)
It took a good bit of analysis and thought, but I decided not to make the fireplace the focal point of the room. Why? Because the room is long and narrow, and orienting the room that way would have forced me into mounting the TV over the mantle (which I'm not fond of). Also, it would have routed the traffic in such a way as to interrupt both TV watching and conversations. So, I decided to turn the furniture to the side, facing the back wall, and centered the TV on that wall, creating a cozy conversational area and workable TV viewing arrangement. What do you think? How would you have arranged this room??
If you have any better ideas, I'm open to suggestions! :)
After such a busy weekend of celebrations the week before, it has been a pretty quiet week! Taylor and Tyler went to Florida last weekend for Abby's sister's graduation. Tyler started his summer session at the college on Monday, so he's been busy with classes and homework. Taylor has been working his two jobs and working out every day. Chris and Hannah have been studying for the ACT, which they take on Saturday, and Luke, Matt, and Bethany have been working on school work in addition to enjoying some free time.
I hosted a lunch/planning session at my house for the homeschooling moms from my church on Tuesday, and invited a neighbor and her four children over for lunch on Wednesday. Those were the highlights of the week!
We also got outside and planted some flowers right before the rains came! It was so humid that I had sweat dripping off my face and my clothes were soaked!! Within the hour, the heavy clouds couldn't contain their load any longer and the deluge started!! Fortunately, the flowers survived the extreme soaking and yesterday's tornado warning passed uneventfully for us, and Andrea is on her way up the coast!
So, that was my week! A relatively quiet and restful week with not too much going on! No big celebrations; no emergencies; no crises! :) How was your week?
If you have time, please drop by my dear friend, Lori's blog. She blogs from the front porch of her cozy little log cabin nestled in the woods of the South Carolina mountains. You will enjoy her warm and witty writing style! Tell her that Elizabeth sent you! :)
Please join me again next Friday on my front porch!!
