Little Lads and Ladies of Virtue {A Review and Giveaway}

As you probably know, if you've been reading my blog for any length of time, I consider character training to be an extremely important part of parenting. In fact, it was one of the factors that persuaded me to start homeschooling my children back in the beginning (over 24 years ago)!

Based on 2 Peter 1:1-7, I believe that my priorities for my children should be Faith (in the Lord Jesus Christ), followed by Virtue (godly character) followed by knowledge. As with so many things, our modern world has flipped this upside down and puts the priority on knowledge, with a little nod to character, and a total disregard of faith.

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge . . .  ~ 1 Peter 1:5

Character training must start early!  The first five years of a child's life are a crucial time when many habits and attitudes are being formed that will affect the rest of their lives!

Many parents believe in the importance of teaching character to their children, but they just don't know where to start!  Or perhaps, they weren't instructed in godly character themselves, so they lack confidence in teaching character qualities to their children. In addition, many parents believe in the value of character training, but they let it get pushed aside in the busyness of life.

Kathie Morrissey of The Character Corner to the rescue!!  She has written a character curriculum for young children that will help you teach godly character qualities to your children in minutes a day with very minimal preparation!

Her new book, Little Lads and Ladies of Virtue
 teaches 24 essential character qualities.  The suggested format is to spend a week on each character quality, which would make this program last for 6 months. It could be covered in a shorter amount of time, especially in a church or school setting, but I've found that focusing on one character quality for a week at a time is the most effective way to actually have your children begin to internalize the character quality being studied.

This outstanding character curriculum contains five short but powerful lessons for each character trait.  The lessons are directed at the pre-school or young elementary aged child, but don't be surprised if you learn a thing or two yourself about how to apply the character qualities being taught!  ;)

One of the elements I love about this program is that it includes both consistency and variety.  Over the course of a week, you will teach your child a concise definition for the character trait, a short memory verse, 3 "I Will" statements that help your child apply the character quality to his or her life, and daily prayers of application.  You will also find creative ideas for games, object lessons, and role plays that will help your children practice the character quality in a fun way!  I love the multi-sensory approach, as it helps your child retain what is being taught.

Kathie even includes a coloring page for each character trait, a reward chart with a picture to be colored, and a space to display the earned character badges.  In addition, there is a corresponding copybook, which can be used to reinforce the character quality and practice penmanship at the same time, which will be very helpful for homeschooling families.

I really love this character curriculum, and wish it had been around when I was a young mom trying to teach character to my house full of "characters!"  Actually, I'm glad to have it in my arsenal even now, as a not-so-young mom whose children are growing up!  I look forward to using this with my grandchildren down the road!

I encourage you to purchase this excellent resource for use with your children, grandchildren, or students.  It will be an asset to your home, school or church!

Yes, all 9 are ours, too. We've still got three littles 5 and under and would love this book to help guide us through the training of our small children.

This would be great to have in teaching my children and myself as my husband and I grow our family.

I would love to win the Little Lads and Ladies of Virtue book because being a fairly new Christian, I used an unbiblical way to shape my children's characters, so I now have extra work to do to shape them in the Lord. As a sole parent (who also homeschools) I have double the work so I need all the help I can get. I also need help with my character, so I'm hoping that I could learn a thing or two as well. After all, I'm their role model and need to model the right things for them. Thanks. :)

We have a few attitudes around here that could use some refinement - and I certainly could use some help in the best way to accomplish that!
