Marriage Monday: Model P31: Let Her Own Works Praise Her in the Gates

Welcome back to Marriage Monday!  I'm so glad you've joined me as we focus on strengthening and promoting godly marriages, both in our nation and in our own backyards.  {The need for this has never been greater!}

Today I am concluding my series for wives (and future wives) based on the ideal wife of Proverbs 31. It has been both fun and challenging to look at this passage verse by verse and discover practical ways to apply these timeless truths to our own lives as women of the 21st century. I hope you are inspired to emulate this worthy woman and become a Model P31!

Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. ~ Proverbs 31:31

If you read back over the entire passage -- Proverbs 31:10-31 -- you'll realize that much of what this amazing woman did was done in "secret."  The majority of her hard work, loving service, and the development of a variety of skills was accomplished in her own home and for the benefit of her own family. Eventually, many of her talents and abilities "spilled over" into the community as she served the poor and needy and supplied her hand-crafted items to the merchants.

Now, we learn that her works are being publicly praised in the city gates! That is where the leaders of the city gathered to conduct official business!

As I think about her works being done in the "secrecy" of her own home, it reminds me of several verses in Matthew chapter 6 that talk about how the good works that we do in secret will be seen of God and He will reward us openly.  I'm also reminded of Luke 8:17:

For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden
that will not be known and come to light.

Many young women fail to realize that the way they treat their husbands and children, the way they manage (or mismanage) their homes, what they watch and read and what they involve themselves in, and how they invest their time will one day not be secret, but will be manifest to the world. And that day will come sooner than they expect . . . our works are eventually broadcast for all to see and will either bring us (and our husbands) honor or dishonor, praise or shame.

As our children grow, they reveal much of what has transpired in our homes and broadcast it openly. One verse that the Lord keeps bringing to mind is Proverbs 29:15:

The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

We can learn so much wisdom from thinking about this very simple, biblical concept. The seeds we plant down in the soil when no one is watching, will one day bear a harvest that everyone sees!  Our secret disciplines . . . or our secret indiscretions . . . will one day be broadcast to the world and either bring us praise and honor  . . . or shame and regret.
I don't know about you, but I truly want the fruit of my life to bring me, my husband, my children, and my Lord, praise and honor and glory!

Once again, let me share a quote from lovely Model P31, Elizabeth George. This is from her book, Beautiful in God's Eyes:

Paraphrased in today's words, Proverbs 31:31 could read, "Give her credit for her achievements! Give her all that she has earned! Give her all that she has worked for so diligently! Give her the fruit of her hands, the harvest of a lifetime of loving effort! Give her the profit she's earned, the goods she's worked, the reputation she's established, the marriage she's nurtured, the home she's built, the family life she's cultivated, the future she's labored for! Give it all to her!

Then, I believe that this virtuous woman, who is praised because her life was built on the fear of the Lord, will take that praise and lay it at her Savior's feet, knowing that she could not have done any of it without Him!  Isn't that beautiful?  Isn't that the life we all long for?  A life that is worthy of praise, both here on earth and throughout eternity!

Especially for Single P31s:

As a single P31,
l encourage you to not be deceived by popular feminist propaganda! If you've been following this series, I hope your heart has been stirred to be a Proverbs 31 woman!  Don't be deceived by what comes out of Hollywood or Washington D.C. -- true beauty, joy and fulfilment come from the inside out; they come from living a life built on the fear of the Lord; they come from giving our lives away in joyful service to our families!  You can be a true Model P31, whether single or married, as you emulate her character! I encourage you to start now where ever you are in your life, building your life around God and His unchangeable Word, seeking after true beauty, and modeling yourself after the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31! She is not a mirage -- she is real! You can be her!  :)

Project P31, Mission #22:

While our series has come to an end, your work is just beginning! I encourage you to examine what you do in "secret" and what the results will be when these actions are broadcast to all.  Your daily words and attitudes and actions are like seeds that you are planting "in secret." Do you know that these seeds will grow and bring forth a harvest??  What kind of a harvest can you expect from the seeds you are planting? Will the harvest bring forth sweet or bitter fruit??

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man [or woman] sows, that he will also reap.  For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. ~ Galations 6:7-9

I love Proverbs 31. As someone who would like to be a wife some day, I find it to be my guide to preparation. Thank you so much for your series.

I love this chapter. Thanks for pointing out that she did much in secret. I hadn't really thought of that before, but it is so true. That is encouraging as we work to accomplish the mundane tasks in our lives that no one is talking about. Those things are still very important and make a difference!
